Last week we experienced our first winter storm of 2020 in the Pacific Northwest. So, naturally, we packed up our review car of the week — a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison — and headed to the mountains for an adventure.

I’ve seen too many videos where the Colorado gets struck but the Tacoma works it’s way out with Crawl Control. You brought the wrong truck, unless you were trying to get stuck :)

Wrong tires. The A/T kind of tire just plain sucks on snow.

Anything short of studs and if things are really bad - chains - are subpar for me. I hate the snow.

This, generally large lugged AT tires are not good in snow and ice. Also tire pressure plays a role like in sand. If they aired down to 15 psi it might do better.

We got a Tundra stuck last year. We do have a 4Runner coming up in our schedule (we don’t own any of these, they’re provided by the manufacturers) and will attempt a similar test with it, to see if Crawl Control can get us out.

... at that point I knew you were stuck... there are however very few things that are as fun as driving a competent 4 WD rig in deep snow.

I took my girlfriend wheeling in a Jeep Cherokee years ago... in southern California near San Bernardino. It was A pril and most of the snow had melted but there were still large sections of this forest service road with old corny snow.
step 1: 4wd High range through snow bank , okay that worked still going.... not too bad and kinda fun
step 2: 4wd low range, okay that kinda worked but the snow drifts were getting deeper and the jeep was struggling. still going...
step 3: 4wd low, dif locked. Crap this is getting scary . I don’t know if I can go through another one of these snow banks. but lets try another.... oh and there is no where to turn around now...
Step 4: dig out rig with safety helmet, well that escalated, maybe I shouldn’t have hot- ro ded through that last snow bank.. but where do I go from here?
step 5: get hopelessly high centered and hike out to nearest town and call for a ride...
step 6: go back next day with shovels and chains to recover jeep.
Step 7: never ever do anything that dumb again.

This is why I don’t like snow wheeling. Its the sideways action and the instant stuck with the joys of the stuff you’re stuck in being cold and wet

I love my front and rear lockers, but I’ve come to find they can be equal parts liability in the snow as asset. Traction management systems seem to do better because of their pulsing nature. I got myself into a lot of trouble doing something like this once, I was going down the hill sideway, until I caught a berm...which saved my butt.
Props to keeping up the show. the hardest times to film are the best times to film.
I also had brand new duratracs at the time. Confidence > skill.

Ha, thanks for the video. That was fun to watch. We have 4Runner TRD Pro and Land Cruiser coming up on our schedule, so it’s only going to get sketchier before the season s change.
